Description

Pendunculate Oak (Quercus robur) also known as Common Oak grows into a very large tree with a widespreading crown of up to 20m. It is an extremely long-lived tree living upto 1000 years. It is found growing inland generally on low lands doing well on clay soils and deep fertile soils.This tree will grow in many types of soil but on upland sites with shallow acidic soil we find Sessile Oak is more suitable. Penduculate Oak will tolerate waterlogging during the winter and will grow a much straight trunk if surronded by other trees. Hazel makes companion to Oak. It one of the best trees for wildlife hosting 100s of insects and small animals as well as providing habitat for fungi and many small plants. It would have been one of the main trees found in the ancient forests that used cover this country. Oak could be planted to help fill gaps as Ash trees die back.
