Description
Black Poplar
Populus nigra
This is a beautiful tree will grow to 30m tall and can live for 200 years. The bark is dark brown but often appears black, and is thick with numerous fissures and burrs. Twigs are lumpy and brown in colour. It is not suitable for a small garden as roots will travel. It will grow on in wet conditions beside a field drain or on a flood plain. There is some debate to wether this tree is a true native but alot of botanist think it is. These trees were propagated from a very old stand of trees from East Galway. Rare tree not to be confused with the cultivar Lombardy Poplar Populus nigra italica. Black Poplar will grow fast and spread into a tree with a substantial canopy
