Betula pubescens
Birch is pioneer tree, that is easy and fast to grow. Mature trees grow into an upright form with a light canopy that has drooping branches. Bark is whitish in colour with cracked bark. Younger branches have a purple/brown colour that is visible in winter. Birch have delicate small trianglular leaves and produce lots of yellow catkins in early spring.
Grow well in clusters 4-7 trees planted 1.5m apart
Common Birch is an important wildlife tree providing food and habitat for more than 300 insect species and many more birds and animals.
Birch wood is tough and heavy, making it suitable for furniture, handles and toys.
The sap can be tapped in early spring to make refreshing drinks, wines, ales and liqueurs.
