Copper Beech are large deciduous trees grown for their deep purple leaves, which become reddish in autumn. It has smooth grey bark, ovate leaves colouring well in autumn, and inconspicuous flowers followed by usually spiny fruits, known as beech nuts that are edible and can also be pressed to make culinary oil,
It can be grown as a tidy hedge that will hold its dead leaves until new ones are formed in spring.
